In this lesson, you will learn about the place value structure of the base-ten number system.

You are probably already familiar with the place value chart, but take a moment to review it with an introduction to place value.

Listen to the following video for a review of place value.

Next, watch a video to learn about the relationships between digits and their place value.

Answer the following questions.

• How does the value of a digit change as it moves to the left on a place value chart?
• What is the relationship between the ones and the tens? The tens and the hundreds? The hundreds and the thousands?
• What is the relationship between the tens and thousands? The thousands and hundred thousands?
• What is the value of a 5 as it moves to the left on a place value chart?
  Begin with the ones column and write a multiplication sentence for each column. For example, 5 x 1 = 5, 5 x 10 = 50, and so on.

After you answer the questions, practice place value problems to strengthen your skills with the activities below.
