In this lesson, you'll learn how to find things that are the same and that are different in two different texts about counting and cats!
There are many different texts about lots of different things!
Sometimes, there are even texts about the same topic!
In this lesson, you are going to see and find things that are the same in a text and see and find things that are different in a text! Let's begin!
We are going to read two different texts about the same topic: counting to 10!
However, we are going to find the things that are the same and the things that are different in these two stories.
We are going to watch a read-aloud of the story Count to 10 with a Mouse by Margaret Wise Brown and a read-aloud of the story Spot Counts from 1 to 10 by Eric Hill!
We can create a Venn diagram!
A Venn diagram is a helpful tool with two circles that overlap. Look at the Venn diagram below:
You can see that the yellow circle overlaps the blue circle.
The green section is where we can write down things that are the same in two different texts or stories.
Each of the texts we read today will have its own circle.
The yellow circle is only for details we find in the story Count to 10 with a Mouse. The blue circle is only for things we find in Spot Counts from 1 to 10.
We're ready now to look for and find things that are the same and different in each story!
One thing we can look for is the topic of the story (or what the book is about).
We already know this is the same in these two stories. They are both about counting to 10!
We can also look at the illustrations (or pictures), the characters in the text, and the setting (or where this story takes place). There are other things we can compare and contrast as well.
As we read today, let's focus on comparing and contrasting these three things:
It's time to watch the first read-aloud, Count to 10 with a Mouse | Kids Books from Storytime Train:
Now, follow along with the read-aloud Spot Counts from 1 to 10 | Books About Numbers | Children's Books Read Aloud from Ririro:
Great work!
Now, let's see if we can find what is the same and what is different about the illustrations (or pictures), the topic, and the characters!
First, let's look at the illustrations or pictures.
Yes!
Yes!
So, we can add that to our Venn diagram in the green Same in Both section. We can write has pictures because they both have pictures (even if they are different kinds of pictures).
Yes! They are both about counting to 10!
So we can add about counting to 10 in our Venn diagram in the green Same in Both section.
Hmmm. Well, there is definitely a character in Count to 10 with a Mouse.
Yes!
Yes! But this character is a dog. So, that is definitely a difference about these two texts!
So we will write main character is a mouse in the yellow circle and main character is a dog in the blue circle.
Now, try to think about another one on your own!
Good work finding things that are the same and that are different!
Now, move on to the Got It? section to see how much you remember!
