Your help is needed to complete a top secret math mission! The Master Math computer has been hacked and the password was reset. To get back into the computer, you will need to convert fractions into decimals.

  • Can you crack the code?

Here is your first mission: Convert 25 into a decimal.

  • How will you complete your mission?
  • What do you need to do to convert a fraction to a decimal?
  • Did you think about division?

You can use long division to convert a fraction to a decimal. Simply divide the numerator (the top number) by the denominator (the bottom number) to find the equivalent decimal.

  • For example, what is the decimal form of 25?
0 . 4 < 5 is bigger than 2, so it divides in 0 times. Then, put in the decimal point.
  5 2 . 0 < 2.0 is the same as 2. Ignore the decimal. How many times does 5 go into 20?
  - 2   0 < 5 goes into 20 4 times. Write the 4 behind the decimal point.
0 < Finish the long division problem. 20 - 20 has a remainder of zero.

So, 25 is equal to 0.4!

  1. Where does the numerator go in the division problem?
  2. Where does the denominator go in the division problem?
  3. What two things do you add to the numerator in the division problem?
