Your parent asks you to list how many of each toy and game you have. Or you enter a contest where you write down how many beans are in a jar. Can you write the numbers down or spell them out on paper?
The State of Liberty is just over one hundred eleven feet tall.
When you learned to count, you most likely learned to start counting with zero and then one, two, three, and so on.
These are called counting numbers.
The place value of the digits in a number helps you name the number in written form or write it using numerical form.
A number in written form is spelled out in words. A number in numerical form is written using digits.

To write the names of numbers through 1,000, you need to know how to say and write the following numbers.
0 - zero 1 - one 2 - two 3 - three 4 - four 5 - five 6 - six 7 - seven 8 - eight 9 - nine |
10 - ten 11 - eleven 12 - twelve 13 - thirteen 14 - fourteen 15 - fifteen 16 -sixteen 17 - seventeen 18 - eighteen 19 - nineteen |
20 - twenty 30 - thirty 40 - forty 50 - fifty 60 - sixty 70 - seventy 80 - eighty 90 - ninety 100 - one hundred |
Example
Use the written form to write the number 23.
Now, put the two of them together.
If 20 is read as twenty and 3 is read as three, then 23 is read as twenty-three.
When you write two-digit numbers that do not end in a zero, such as 23, you use a hyphen within the word. 23 is written as twenty-three.
Write the names of the two numbers on paper.
If a number has three digits, such as 345, write the number of the hundreds first and then write the rest of the number.
It is essential to remember that the word and is not used when writing whole numbers. The word and is used when naming decimal numbers.
For example, 2.5 would be read as two and one half. When reading decimal numbers, the word and represents the decimal point (.).
Example
Use the written form to write the number 345.
First, write the number of hundreds and then write the rest of the numbers.
345 is written as three hundred forty-five.
The word forty represents four tens, but it is not spelled the same as the word four. Check the spelling of words to be sure you are writing them correctly.
Example
Write the number eight hundred nine in numerical form.
First, write the number of hundreds.
Write your number using the numerical form on paper.
Now, see if you wrote the correct number.
Eight hundred nine means eight hundreds plus nine ones. There are no tens, so don’t forget to write a zero in the tens place.
The number written in numerical form is 809.
