Addition: 4-digit Numbers

Adding large numbers may seem difficult, but if you can add two- and three-digit numbers, you can add larger numbers with four digits!

When adding four-digit numbers, be sure to line up the place values and decimal point if there is one. Also, don't forget to include a comma with numbers that are in the thousands place! For example:

• three thousand, five hundred would be written as 3,500.

To add numbers, it can be helpful to follow these steps:

1. Rewrite the problem vertically and line up the digits by place value spot and decimal point if there is one.
2. Add the digits by column, starting with the "ones" column, then tens, hundreds, and thousands.
3. Regroup if necessary. Remember that regrouping is necessary when ten "ones" get grouped as a ten, and are carried over to be counted with the other tens. You can also regroup other place value spots any time the number is ten or greater.

Now, you will use these steps to find the sum of four-digit numbers.

Wow! You were cleaning your room and found a jar full of coins. There were 2,456 pennies in one jar and then 4,111 pennies in your piggy bank already. How many pennies do you have?

2,456 + 4,111 =

1. First, rewrite the problem vertically. Use grid paper to help you line up your numbers.
2. Next, start adding in the ones column and don't forget to regroup!
3. Move to the left and add the tens, hundreds, and thousands.

You would have 6,567 pennies! Wow!
