Do you feel like multiplication problems make a monkey out of you? Multiplication gets trickier as the number of numbers increases. No sweat! Learn from games and practice how to solve these problems!
Maya has a problem. She works in the monkey exhibit at the zoo. The zoo needs her to decide how much money she will spend on food for the monkeys this year. To find the answer, Maya needs to multiply a multi-digit number.
Let's see if we can feed these monkeys!
Maya spends $352 a year to buy food for one monkey. The zoo has eight monkeys.
To solve this problem, we need to multiply!
We know Maya spends $352 for one monkey. So, if the zoo has eight monkeys, we need to multiply $352 by eight.
1 | ||||||
3 | 5 | 2 | ||||
x | 8 | |||||
6 | < | Multiply the ones by 8.
2 x 8 = 16 | ||||||
Place the 6 in the ones place, and carry the 1 to the tens place. |
4 | 1 | |||||
3 | 5 | 2 | ||||
x | 8 | |||||
1 | 6 | < | Multiply the tens by 8.
5 x 8 = 40 | ||||||
Now, add the 1 + 40 = 41. | ||||||
Place the 1 in the tens place, and carry the 4 to the hundreds place. |
4 | 1 | |||||
3 | 5 | 2 | ||||
x | 8 | |||||
2 | 8 | 1 | 6 | < | Multiply the hundreds by 8.
3 x 8 = 24 | ||||||
Now, add the 4 + 24 = 28. |
The zoo spends $2,816 a year on food for the monkeys.
