Lesson Plan - Get It!

Scientists all over the world follow specific rules and procedures when conducting experiments.

They do this to keep themselves safe.

• What are some safety rules you have in your learning space?

Share at least three rules you have that keep you safe in your learning space.

Just like you have rules to follow, so do scientists! Scientists follow rules that will keep them safe while experimenting.

• Are you ready to look at some of the equipment scientists use to keep safe?

Look at what everyone in the picture below is wearing.

• What do you see?

You can see everyone in the picture is wearing safety goggles. Think about a time you got something in your eyes that hurt, like shampoo.

• How did it feel?

It probably didn’t feel very good! Scientists use safety goggles to protect their eyes from things that can harm them. Any time you are experimenting with things that could possibly hurt your eyes, you should wear safety goggles.

For example, if you are mixing chemicals with your parent or teacher, safety goggles will keep your eyes safe if anything splashes or spills!

Any time you are handling something that can irritate your skin, you should wear rubber gloves. Rubber gloves are great for keeping germs, chemicals, and other harmful things off your skin.

Any time you are wearing rubber gloves, you need to make sure you don’t touch your face with your rubber gloves! When you are finished using rubber gloves, you should throw them away.

Scientists have certain rules to follow while they are experimenting. Any time you are following the directions for a scientific experiment, you need to make sure you read each direction carefully.

It is a scientist's job to make sure they measure all of their ingredients carefully and accurately. A good scientist always follows each step with care. If a scientist doesn’t follow directions, it could cause the scientist to get hurt or sick.

Finally, all scientists use common sense! If a scientist thinks something could be dangerous or harmful, they take the important steps necessary to keep themselves safe.

For example, if a scientist is working with fire, the scientist will check to make sure a fire extinguisher is nearby in case there is an emergency. Any time you complete an experiment you should answer these questions:

• Is this experiment safe for me to do by myself?
• What will I need to do if there is an emergency?
• What safety equipment will I need to stay safe?

If you ever feel unsafe or worried while conducting an experiment, stop what you are doing and ask an adult for help.
