Lesson Plan - Get It!

People live in many different places.

In the previous lesson in the My Planet series, found in the Related Lessons in the right-hand sidebar, you learned about your street.

• Did you know your street is either part of a city or town, or connects to a city or town?

If you live in a city, you may have many streets that are filled with cars and surrounded by tall buildings. If you live in a town, you may have more trees around your streets, and smaller stores and buildings.

Check out the pictures below to see a city and to see a town. The picture on the left is a city, and the picture on the right is a town. Discuss what is the same and what is different in the pictures below:

• What is the name of your city or town?

Share your answer with your parent or teacher.

If you don't know the name of your city or town, ask your parent or teacher for help. Cities and towns have different names. This helps mail carriers, drivers, and emergency services find the town or city they need to go to.

Think about a time you went on a drive through your town or city.

• What are some things you saw?

Share your story about your city or town.

If you live in the city, you may have much more traffic, taller buildings, and busier sidewalks. If you live in the country, you may have quiet streets, small shops, and very little traffic. Cities are much busier than towns.

You may have seen schools, churches, grocery stores, parks, and many other types of buildings near where you live. Each city and town has streets that connect to it. Whether it is one street or hundreds of streets, all towns and cities need ways for their people to get from place to place.
