My Street

Whether you live in an apartment, house, or condo, you live on a street.

Some people live on dirt roads and some people live on paved roads.

• What is your street made of?

Streets can look very different from each other. Some streets have houses that are close together, and other streets have houses that are far apart.

• Do you live close to your neighbors? 
• Can you see a house across the street?

Tell your parent or teacher about the neighbors you have.

• Are they close or are they far away? 
• What do the houses on your street look like?

Even though streets may look different, they are all important for many reasons.

• Can you think of why it is important for your street to have a name?

Street names are very important because they help people in many ways. Street names are posted on street signs. Street signs can be used to help people get from place to place without getting lost. They help emergency services, like police officers and fire fighters, help people in danger.

• Who else uses street signs? 
• How does the community helper pictured below use street signs?

The community helper above is called a mailman or a postal worker. Postal workers use street names to deliver mail to the right homes. Without street names and house numbers, they would have a lot of trouble delivering mail to the right people!
