Drawing pictures is a great strategy to use when you are stuck on a tricky addition problem! You can use pictures to help you with word problems, too!
There are many options when it comes to drawing out your addition problems.
The first thing you should think about is what the math problem is asking you to do. Read the math word problem below:
Sally has four flowers. She picks three more flowers. How many flowers does she have in all? |
What object are you adding in this problem? Tell your parent or teacher.
That's right! You are adding flowers. Before you draw out this problem, think to yourself, "Will this take me a very long time to draw?" If the answer is, "Yes," try drawing circles instead of the actual object.
Take out a piece of paper and a pencil and draw the flowers like this:
Do your flowers look similar to the ones in the box above? Fantastic! As long as you have four flowers plus three flowers, you are on the right track.
Now it is time to add the pictures together. Count all of the pictures. Tell your parent or teacher your answer.
Did you count seven flowers? Great!
