• I am sure you have heard the word "prefix" before, but what does it mean?

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the meaning of "prefix" and begin to explore some prefixes.

In our Prefix series of Related Lessons, found in the right-hand sidebar, you will need to know the word parts that will be discussed.

Take a look at vocabulary.com to learn more about the meaning of "prefix."

A basic word to which affixes (prefixes and suffixes) are added is called a root word. A root word is a "real" word by itself but is the basis for a new word when an affix is added.

Look at the word "connect."

Look the meaning of the word "connect" up in your dictionary or at dictionary.com.

• What suffixes can you add to the end of the word "connect"?

You can make the word "connects," "connected," and "connecting."

• Did you think of any other suffixes you can add to the word?

Now, use the word in a sentence.

Now, you will add a prefix to the word connect. Add the prefix "dis-" to the word connect and you create the word "disconnect."

• What does this word mean?

If you are unsure, look it up in the dictionary. Use this word in a sentence. Turn and tell your teacher how the meaning of the word "connect" changed when you added the prefix "dis."

• Can you infer what the prefix "dis" means?

"Dis" means the opposite of, or not. How many words can you think of that begin with the prefix "dis"? Make a list of these words.
