Fiction stories are stories that are unreal and are made up in the author's imagination.

Fiction can be broken into different categories called genres. There are many different genres of fiction. Knowing what genre of story you are reading can help you understand the story and make predictions.

Some popular genres are:

Fantasy

Magic and imaginary worlds and creatures are a sign of fantasy. Watch this Molding Minds Dot Com video, called Fiction Book Genres - What is Fantasy?:

Historical Fiction

In this genre, the story is set in a time that is recognizable in history, and may include events that are factual, such as the Civil War. Listen to this historical fiction story called White Socks Only read by Amber Rose Tamblyn:

Mystery

A problem or crime must be solved despite many things being unknown to the characters and reader. Listen to Sesame Street - The Case of the Missing Cat:

Science Fiction

Adventure

Action is the key to a good adventure book! You will usually find the characters on some sort of mission, journey, or quest, trying to accomplish, prevent, learn, or find something important to the story line. One or more of the characters experiences some change in the way he or she feels about something along the journey as well. Realistic Fiction

These stories may seem as though they are true stories, autobiographies, or biographies, but they are not. They are made-up stories that seem as though they could happen to anyone. Listen to the story called Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day:
