In descriptive writing, you use words to create a picture, or image, for a topic.

You can tell what your topic looks like, sounds like, feels like, smells like, or tastes like, just by sharing the BEST words and details!

The word list below is an example of using the BEST words to describe the picture.

Ice Cream:

• Looks like a ball.
• Smells like sugar.
• Tastes like candy.
• Feels smooth.
• Sounds inviting.

What are BEST words? They are the best words you can think of to describe something.

BEST words are:

• Big - They help draw a big picture of something
• Exciting - They can add action to the picture
• Strong - They make powerful images
• Telling - They tell something about the object

Once you choose the BEST words to describe the topic, you are ready to put your words into writing!

For example:

An ice cream cone looks like a ball of something yummy and is inviting! I love to eat ice cream because it tastes like candy and smells like sugar. Ice cream feels smooth in my mouth. Chocolate ice cream is my favorite!

The BEST words you choose are written into a message for others to read. The written message helps the reader make a picture in his or her mind!
