After watching the video, explain nouns to your teacher or parent.

If you said that a noun is the naming word for a person, place, thing, or animal, you are correct! Nouns are all around you!

Nouns are very important when you are speaking and writing because they tell who or what.

If you just said, "Fell over," that would not make sense, because we don't know who or what fell. You could be talking about a plant, a cup of water, or even your baby sister. But we wouldn't know unless you added a noun to the sentence.

Next, listen to the story A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink: What is a Noun? by Brain P. Clearly. After you are finished with the story, name three nouns you heard. Share those three nouns with your teacher or parent, and let them know if each noun is a person, place, thing, or animal.

A proper noun is a specific name, and it is always capitalized. For example, "city" is a noun because it is a place, but it is a common noun because it does not tell about a specific place. The name of a specific city, like Phoenix, would be capitalized.
