Lesson Plan - Get It!

In the picture of Earth, you see a lot of blue.

• Do you know what that is?

If you said, "Water," then you are correct! There is a lot of water on Earth.

• Can you see white swirling around the Earth?

Those are clouds. The white at the bottom of the Earth is the continent of Antarctica, and it is white because Antarctica is covered in snow and ice.

• What are the green and brown pieces on the Earth?

Those are land in different forms.

Now imagine zooming in, so that you can see more on the surface of the Earth. You would see where there are mountains and rivers, where there are deserts and flat lands, and where there are rain forests.

From space, all of the water looks the same, and all of the pieces of land look the same. However, when you zoom in; you can see different forms of water and different forms of land.

Not all land is flat. As mentioned before, there are mountains.

• Can you think of other land forms you have seen?
• What about other water forms?

Let’s take a closer look at some of the more familiar forms.

This is called a lake. A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land.

This is called a river. A river is a thin body of water that flows into a bigger body of water.

This is an ocean. An ocean is a very large, expansive body of water.

This is a mountain. A mountain is a large hill that is much taller than the land around it.

This is a valley. A valley is the opposite of a mountain. It is a low piece of land between hills or mountains.

This is an island. An island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water.

This is a plain. A plain is a large area of flat land with no trees.
