Native Americans were the first people to live on the land now known as the United States.
They were living on this land long before the explorer Christopher Columbus and the Pilgrims came from Europe following the Middle Ages.
The Native Americans have also been called Indians. They have this name because Christopher Columbus thought he was sailing to a place called India, so he called the people he met Indians.
There were many groups of Native Americans; each group is called a tribe. Some tribes were friendly, and some were not.
They each lived off the land and grew corn as their main crop. They were hunters because animals were critical to them. They would use the meat for food, the fur and skins to make clothing and shelter, and the bones to make weapons.
