When you give animals or objects human qualities — like speaking, feeling, and thinking — you are using a writing technique called personification.
Think of all of the cartoons that give human qualities to animals or objects.
Sponge Bob Square Pants, Arthur, and Tom and Jerry are some examples, because each of these cartoon shows includes an animal or object that acts like a human.
Personification is a commonly used literary tool. Watch this video of personification in commercials.
