Peter and John is tall, but Mary and Susan is really tall. Sometimes when we write sentences, they seem a little weird. This can be for many different reasons, but one of the most common is that our subjects and verbs don't agree.
In many languages, subjects and verbs agree in number and gender, but in English they only agree in number.
Our subjects are the nouns (or pronouns) that do the action. The verbs are the action. They must agree in number, so if we have a singular subject, the verb must be singular also. If the subject is plural, then our verb must be plural.
Read the following pairs of sentences.
My friends are happy when I get to go play soccer with them. My friends is happy when I get to play soccer with them.
My dog Blackie and I go to the park in the afternoon. My dog Blackie and I goes to the park in the afternoon.
Michael is a great chess player. Michael are a great chess player.
Those are pretty easy examples, and the correct sentence is the first one in each pair.
